What building two fictional brands taught us about the moderon system

We found the gaps in our system using brands that don't exist, so our actual clients never have to pay for our education.

Before Moderon had a single paying client, we built two brands that do not exist.

One is a boutique strategy and advisory firm for early-stage founders called Vela. The other is a premium fitness and performance studio for high-performing professionals called Kore Studios.

Neither company has ever had a client. Neither has a founding team. Neither is incorporated anywhere. They were built entirely as proof of methodology and what we learned in the process was more useful than we expected.

Why we did it

The honest reason is that we needed to demonstrate what Moderon produces before anyone had paid us to produce it. Asking a founder to invest in a complete brand system from a studio with no visible output is a significant ask. We wanted to remove that barrier by showing the work before the conversation about the work began.

But there was a second reason that became more important as the project progressed. We wanted to stress-test the system. To find out where the process broke down, where the briefs were unclear, where the handoffs between strategy and design and execution created gaps. Building fictional brands meant we could do this without a client's timeline, budget, or patience as a constraint.

What we found

The first thing we found is that the quality of the brief determines everything. When the creative brief for Vela was clear, specific, and opinionated, the design that came back reflected the brand intention accurately. When the brief was vague, what came back was technically competent but creatively directionless. The same designer. The same tools. Completely different outcomes depending on the clarity of the brief.

This reinforced something we already believed but had not yet proven through our own process. Creative direction is not a review function. It is not what happens at the end when you look at the work and say whether it is good or not. It is what happens at the beginning when you define the standard clearly enough that good work becomes the natural output.

The second thing we found is that consistency across touchpoints requires active management, not passive assumption. When we looked at the Vela visual identity, the brand guidelines, the one-page website, and the social templates as separate objects, each one was strong. When we put them side by side and assessed them as a system, the gaps became visible. Small inconsistencies in spacing, slight variations in typographic application, image choices that were individually appropriate but collectively inconsistent.

None of these would have been caught by reviewing the work in isolation. All of them were caught by reviewing the work as a system.

What it changed

We tightened the brief format. We added a system cohesion check as a mandatory step before any work is considered complete. We made the creative direction role more explicit at the front of every project rather than treating it as an ongoing function throughout.

These changes came from building work that no client ever asked for. That is the value of doing the work before the work is required of you. The lessons are yours entirely. The client never has to pay for the education.

Vela and Kore Studios will appear in the Moderon portfolio. Not because we need to pretend they are real clients but because the thinking behind them, the process that produced them, and the quality of the output are as real as anything commissioned work produces.

The methodology is the same regardless of whether the brief comes with an invoice. That is the point.
